Salida PFLAG is now Spectrum Alliance

The organizers of our monthly PFLAG meetings want to let you know about some important structural changes in our ongoing efforts to bring quality support to our local LGBTQ community.

While PFLAG is an outstanding organization, we have made the decision not to officially affiliate ourselves with them for the following reasons. PFLAG rightfully charges dues for all of the hard work that they do around the country and the information and infrastructure that they provide. If we were to become a full-fledged chapter, we would have to maintain a treasury, collect dues, and solicit donations. Currently, we have space generously donated by Seasons Cafe to hold our meetings and several volunteers which has alleviated our need for money. If all of those participating contribute by bringing snacks to monthly meetings then we should be good to go.

PFLAG also requires a Board of Directors format and a variety of positions that necessitate monthly meetings, record keeping, and financial responsibility and reporting. It is our belief that the amount of time that would need to be required to maintain a board could be better directed elsewhere.

With this in mind, we are changing the name of our current PFLAG meeting to the Spectrum Alliance. We feel the name is more inclusive, there will be no dues, and our mission will remain the same; to provide a safe environment for youth, families, and allies of the LGBTQIA community to educate, socialize, and advocate.

The Spectrum Alliance will continue to meet at our usual time—the third Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Seasons Café. Our next meeting is Monday, July 16th and our topic will be an interesting and humorous TED Talk called “The Gay Agenda”. We look forward to your continued participation in these gatherings.
