Community Movie Event - Hippie Family Values @ A Church

HFVposter_Salida.png

This Event Requires Tickets

Ark Valley Equality Network, Partnership for Community Action, and Hippie Radio 97.5 are pleased to present the film Hippie Family Values, at A Church on Friday, May 17th. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., film at 7 p.m. The filmmaker, Beverly Seckinger, will be in attendance as well!

Filmed over a period of ten years at a remote communal ranch in New Mexico, Hippie Family Values is an intimate chronicle of a handful of hippie elders, along with their adult children and grandkids. The film counters dismissive stereotypes with stories of people whose worldview was forged in the 60s counterculture, and who remain motivated by those youthful convictions in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. The founders of this back-to-the-land experiment are slowing down and facing declining health. Will the next generation be able to sustain the community into the future?

A beautiful piece of work…wonderful!
–Chris Roth, Editor, Communities magazine

A moving, luminous film. Everyone should see it!
–Virginia Scharff, Distinguished Professor of History and Director, Center for the Southwest, University of New Mexico

An immense contribution to communal studies and to public understanding of hippie culture, which bears vital lessons for society at large.
–Don Pitzer, founder, Communal Studies Association and Director Emeritus, SIU Center for Communal Studies

A magnificent film!
–Robert Gerst, Professor of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts College of Art & Design

Please join us on May 17th for this great visual diary of life in an intentional community, and all the struggle - and joy - that can bring.

The Shepherdess of the Glaciers (2016) (NR)

from the filmmaker:

Autumn, the high plateaus of Gya-Miru Valley. A wisp of smoke rises in the midst of this stony wilderness. A rustic tent and a herd of goats in a low stone pen blend into the landscape. The sound of a radio, tuned to All India Radio, can be heard within the tent. TSERING, is sharing her humble everyday life with STANZIN, her film-maker brother. She lives alone eleven months of the year, several days’ hike from the nearest human beings. Sometimes she pays the cost of living with wild animals. As the only, and last surviving herdswoman in her family, Tsering chose the herd over marriage. The culture of her native Ladakh, steeped in Buddhist wisdom, has taught her to accept her fate and to cope with day-to-day difficulties. The blue of the sky and a song on the radio provide her with cheer. She has learned to live with hardship, without comforts. Although sometimes worried, she remains strong and confident about life. The film follows for a year her long hikes to pastures.
